Short synopsis of Wonder Woman 1984:
It’s 1984. The Queen of Themyscira and immortal warrior Diana Prince aka Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), now an anthropologist at Smithsonian Institute, is tangled around her life with an archeologist, Barbara Minerva (Kristen Wiig) and an oil businessman, Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal). When the newly-discovered stone known as Dreamstone is able to grant wishes, things start going bizarre. Along with Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) who is presumed dead in the first film, is Diana Prince ready to save the world for good?
Short introduction of the characters:
DIANA PRINCE: An Amazonian fierce princess and warrior who
fights for justice under the name Wonder Woman. She now works as a senior
anthropologist at Smithsonian Institute, Washington, D.C.
STEVE TREVOR: A once a spy and pilot from the previous film
who appears to be alive.
BARBARA MINERVA: An
archeologist who is keen of Diana and later befriends her.
MAXWELL LORD: An oil businessman taking interest in the
Dreamstone.
Let’s get to the main review. A quick one this time.
I’ve had all my huge interest in this movie since its
production. And then, when my favorite actress Kristen Wiig is announced to play
the famous foe of Wonder Woman, Barbara Minerva (later becomes the archenemy
named Cheetah), I really expect something great in this film. But, does it go as
my expectation?
The casting and acting is a top-notch. Really enjoyed the acting from the incredible casts. Pedro Pascal really pulls off that Maxwell’s annoying persona as in the comics. Kristen Wiig succeeds in delivering the awkward and shy Barbara Minerva. It’s also interesting for it to attach the ‘special’ relationship between United States and Soviet Union. The plot is intriguing but less solid. At some point, I’d zone out, but it’s an enjoyable movie to see during this pandemic, mostly how it emphasizes the word “hope”.
In matter of comic accuracy, WW84 surely introduces more arc about our beloved Diana Prince with some new gadgets and definitely new suit (I won’t spoil anything). It really suits the retro-style that the film promotion offers. The cinematography and color are very pleasing. The CGI is SUPER CLEAN, probably the cleanest CGI of DCEU so far.
We also get to know about Amazonian women, which is great. The
actress are all great and strong women who really portrays of what Amazonians
look like. I’m also amazed with more visualization of Themyscira and 1980s
Washington. It’s very stunning to see from every angle. Stunts are doing just fine, serving several awesome action sequences.
The beginning and the middle sequence of the movie is ALL GREAT. It’s very heartwarming and relatable, until then the climax and resolution part kicks in. For me, it’s something that didn’t make me “wow” enough. The villains do not get justice as what I’m expecting before. I wish it turns out to be more complex on that one action scene, but then it becomes like “It really ends… Like that?”
Kinda disappointed, but that’s when my favorite Hans Zimmer’s
theme is suddenly playing in the background: “Beautiful Lie” from Batman v. Superman (2016). Patty Jenkins
(the director) actually has said that this song is gonna be featured in the
movie, but I don’t know it will hit in THAT part, which suits the sequence very
well.
And yes, Zimmer the Man returns to compose DCEU soundtrack!
Yeay. ALWAYS coming with splendid masterpiece of scores. The iconic Wonder
Woman theme is very triumphant without exception. Gave me goosebumps. He truly never disappoints.
Plus, there is a mid-credits scene! Would say that it's an important scene if you’re
an avid Wonder Woman fan.
To wrap this up, I would say that WW84 is not a good pick for those who usually enjoy CBMs. I’m still disappointed because of my high hopes to certain character arc on the climax (shouldn’t hope too high, really😢). I give it a 5/10. Feel free to leave your thoughts!
