DC FanDome 2021 News Recap: DC Universe to a Promising Future?
“The bright future is (hopefully) in progress.”
The DC Comics’ beloved virtual event is back! Now with more news and announcements to offer, DC FanDome 2021 holds its global event again. The event officially commences at 10am PT on October 16, 2021 (00.00 WIB, October 17). We, as the (super) hungry (and desperate) DC fans, cannot wait for the bright future that might be coming through next year’s movie line-up, starting with Matt Reeves’ The Batman (March 2022), to Jaume Collet-Serra’s Black Adam (July 2022), Andy Muschietti’s The Flash (November 2022), and lastly James Wan’s Aquaman & The Lost Kingdom (December 2022).
Unlike last year’s event, this 2021 DC conference does not have the schedule of the panels, so like it or not, we have to watch the entire event to see our most-anticipated ones.
So, what are the good news that DC
FanDome has given to the fans?
Here is the recap for today’s event. Awesome things are on the way. (Note: I’m mostly recapping the DCEU-related and HBO Max’s news ones, and the always-awaited The Batman, of course)
1. Black Adam
Guest(s): Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson
“The hierarchy of
power in the DC Universe is about to change.”
-The Rock, everytime he gets the chance to promote this movie
The first one to have a warm welcome on the huge DC Comics conference itself is the Man in Black a.k.a Black Adam a.k.a The Rock. An exclusive behind-the-scene was shown during the event, revealing the suit’s logos of the Justice Society of America (JSA) members–Aldis Hodge’s Hawkman, Quintessa Swindell’s Cyclone, Noah Centineo’s Atom Smasher, and Pierce Brosnan’s Dr. Fate–and certainly they look so dope as always. It also features the ‘human’ look of Brosnan’s Kent Nelson and Sarah Shahi’s Adrianna Tomaz.

The Rock finally released an exclusive first look clip with Tomaz and a group of soldiers, and by the end, Black Adam himself dramatically enters the scene wearing his full (and no-padded) suit.
The omega-level antihero storms out theatrically on July 29, 2022.

2. Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom
No guest(s)
A sneak peek of Aquaman’s 2022 sequel titled Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom has been released. More look on Patrick Wilson’s Ocean Master, Yahya Abdul Mateen II’s Black Manta, Jason Momoa’s Aquaman, and the man of the visionary himself: James Wan.
The aquatic hero movie dives deep into the Seven Seas on December 16, 2022.

Brooks, Chukwudi Iwuji, Steve Agee, Jennifer Holland, Freddie Stroma
Premiering on January 13, 2022, only on HBO
Max with the first three episodes, the panel features the show’s six ensemble

When asked what the adult-oriented series is going to look like, producer Matt Miller described it as “like The Office, but as a superhero show, with more people getting shot in the face”.
At last, James Gunn gives us the first official teaser of Peacemaker. Lots of happening there, featuring more characters like Peacemaker’s father Auggie Smith (played by Robert Patrick), martial artist Judomaster (played by Nhut Lee), and Peacemaker’ pet eagle named Eagly.
Watch the James Gunn-y teaser:
4. The Flash
Guest(s): Ezra Miller
The first teaser of Andy Muschietti’s The Flash has come with a speed of light. We get to see a good look of Ezra Miller’s new suit as Barry Allen/The Flash and Sasha Calle’s Supergirl, which is super awesome. In the end, there is a glimpse of the Boss aka the legendary Tim Burton’s Batsy and his iconic vehicle.
The Flash dashes into the big screen on November 4, 2022.

5. HBO Max’s Blue Beetle
Guest(s): Angel Manuel Soto (director), Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (writer), Xolo Maridueña
Centering on the Mexican-American teenager named Jaime Reyes who gains his mystical
superpower from an Egyptian scarab, Blue Beetle finally gets his solo movie since his comic debut in 1939.
Under the works of director Angel Manuel Soto and writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, the movie has cast its titular hero, the 20-year-old actor Xolo Maridueña.
Soto said that this movie will find its core
on the Reyes’ Latino family, thanks to Dunnet-Alcocer’s writing. “This film
kind of opens this door for a new generation of what Blue Beetle can become at
the hands of Jaime.” He continued.
A concept art of Blue Beetle was shared today
at the end of the panel. No announcement of its release date.

6. HBO Max’s Batgirl
Guest(s): Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (directors),
Christina Hodson (writer), Leslie Grace
Meet our lovely live-action Barbara Gordon a.k.a. Batgirl: Leslie Grace. Currently in production for an HBO Max movie release, Batgirl is under the works of director duo Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah and writer Christina Hodson who previously worked on the script for Birds of Prey and The Flash.
Hodson said that this movie, the titular character “is discovering Batgirl for the first time” where she gets to explore “a duality she's always had in her personality”. El Arbi and Fallah expressed their excitement, saying that they “were privileged to be part of this [DC] world” and “felt like a kid again”.
The panel ended with a concept art of the movie itself. Movie’s release date has not been announced.

7. Shazam: Fury of the Gods
Guest(s): Zachary Levi, Asher Angel
Shazam returns! Now with more peeks on the behind-the-scene clip from the filming of its sequel. Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu shine as their villainous roles Hespera and Kalypso, respectively. Rachel Zegler’s mysterious character, who is claimed to be the “key role” of the movie, also appears in the clip. This sequel features a monstrous group of mythical creatures and more godly locations. Last, the new suits of Shazam and his family are so dope! Love the upgrade.
Shazam: Fury of the Gods is slated to be released on June 2, 2023.

8. The Batman – Panel
Guest(s): Matt Reeves (director), Robert Pattinson,
Zoë Kravitz
This time, DC FanDome has ended in a more… bat-sier way.
Now gathering in a panel, the incredibles Matt Reeves, Robert Pattinson, and Zoë Kravitz invited us to slide into the Batcave itself, discussing more things on the most-anticipated DC fans’ 2022 movie (and most-awaited panel too).
As the movie’s director and writer, Reeves
showcased his vision regarding the iteration of Pattinson’s Batman in his noir
detective movie.
“One of the things that are interesting is learning how to be Batman. It’s a criminological experiment. He’s trying to figure out what he can do to change this place,” said Reeves. “He’s seeing he’s not having any of the effect he wants to have. That’s when the murders start to happen and it opens up a whole new world of corruption. Without being an origin tale, it ends up touching on his origins.”
On the Dark Knight’s characterization, Pattinson mentioned that all Batman’s fights “seem personal”. Kravitz also added that Batman “has not yet defined who he is, and gets lost in it”.
The movie is also said to be adapting one of the famous Batman graphic novels titled Batman: Year One (written by Frank Miller and illustrated by David Mazzucchelli), that’s why it has not yet unveiled Batman’s selfless and heroic image.
The Batman hits theaters on March 4, 2022.
Watch its second trailer (glad it still uses a little bit of Nirvana’s Something in the Way & incredible cinematography all credited to the one and only Greig Fraser):

And... it officially ends! So, is it promising enough? You decide!
Goodbye, DC FanDome 2021. See you next year if you’re planning to decide this online conference as an annual event. Hoping to see bigger and more diverse things next year. Looking forward to it.
